Two-part brief to design the cover for the paperback edition of Julian Cope’s book Copendium – An Expedition into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Underworld, published in 2013. The book, written by musician and author Julian Cope, is a collection of reviews first posted by Cope on his own Head heritage web site. For 10 years Cope had written a monthly album reviews, focusing on outsider musicians and artists and bringing to our light some of the more obscure recording artists of the past 50 years. Krautrock, motorik and post-punk, stoner and doom metal, occasionally even jazz, spoken word and hair metal: they are all represented in a wholly persuasive sequence.
After the successful publication of a limited edition box set and hardback editions, Faber and Faber then requested the design of the cover for the paperback edition. Under direction from Cope I was able to utilize elements from the previous edition’s design in order to create this simple, yet effective design, including the use of Cope’s own artwork for the inside front and back covers.

Part two of the brief was to redesign the slip cover for the 3 CD set that accompanied the book. The original design for the slip cover was rejected by Cope, despite the fact it had already gone into circulation. The job therefore, came to me to create a new design, again utilizing the same artwork that had been used for the paperback edition and previous editions of the book. The cd set features music reviewed in the book.
